Explorer Club Board of Directors prepares for Pledge Drive with new faces at the helm

March 10, 2010

PHILADELPHIA - With the Athletic Department's Pledge Drive approaching, the Explorer Club Board of Directors hosted an invigorating, productive meeting in the Hayman Center Conference Room prior to the La Salle vs. Temple men's basketball game on Sunday, February 28. The enthusiasm around the meeting was centered on the introduction of Dennis Reid '70 as the incoming Explorer Club President as well as the addition of Wade Brosius '88 and Katie Jones '96 to the Vice President ranks of the Explorer Club. Also, Wade's wife, Gretchen '88, and Katie's husband, Bill '96, will be joining the Executive Committee.

From the La Salle staff perspective, Athletic Director Dr. Tom Brennan and Explorer Club Executive Director and Associate Athletic Director Kale Beers '95 expressed their satisfaction with the diversification of the Explorer Club leadership. Beers, in particular, has been instrumental in developing relationships with these alumni, as a former classmate of some of the new faces.

Reid will succeed Ken Mancini '69 as President after serving as the Vice President of Special Events. His significant contributions during previous Pledge Drives and Autumn Auctions make him an excellent fit for the position. Also a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, Reid provides a strong connection between Athletics and this esteemed group. Departing President Mancini gave his parting remarks at the meeting, announcing that he will be the Chair of the Pledge Drive as his farewell gesture as President. Mancini's tenure, which he voluntarily extended an extra year to help Beers with his transition, will officially conclude after the Pledge Drive.

The addition of the Wade and Katie as officers, as well as Board commitments from other graduates of the 80s and 90s including Kathy Reynolds '94, Jack Shannon '84, Rich Tarr '88, signifies a new era for the Explorer Club. Participation from this group will aid in reaching alumni who may be reaching a period in life when they are able to allocate time and resources to an affinity such as La Salle Athletics. Explorer Blue and Gold runs deeply in the the Brosius and Jones families. Wade is an avid men's basketball fan, and Gretchen ran track while a student. Katie is an alumnae of the La Salle chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, and Bill was a member of the crew team.

Concluding the meeting, head men's basketball coach Dr. John Giannini shared his strong willingness to attend Explorer Club meetings. Coach Giannini explained that he draws inspiration from the support from the caring people at La Salle.

The first opportunity for this group to flex their fundraising muscle will be the Pledge Drive, which begins at the Blue Chip Reception on March 31 in the Hayman Center Mezzanine.
