PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's soccer team (2-0) defeated Drexel (0-1-1) in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night at McCarthy Stadium. Matt Robinson scored the game-winner on a penalty kick with just under three minutes remaining in regulation to give the Explorers the win. In goal, Mike Kirk registered his second consecutive shutout.
La Salle is now 3-1-1 in home openers dating back to 2011.
After the game, Robinson, who also scored the game-winner on a PK against Loyola for the team's first win just days ago, called this game "the biggest win" for the Explorers.
"We've played Drexel a few times recently," Robinson said. "We haven't gotten the results we've wanted. Two years ago, I remember losing on their field with six seconds left so this win feels good."
The victory also marks the second in as many games under new head coach Rob Irvine.
"It feels good because Drexel is a good team," Irvine said. "They're very well-coached and really organized. They aren't easy to beat, but we found a way."
Kirk was brilliant in net again, making four saves to blank his opponent. The senior goalkeeper's 12th career shutout moves him into fourth in program history in shutouts.
Next up, the Explorers will host Rider on Friday, September 2nd at McCarthy Stadium. The game will start at 7:30 pm and is preceded by thewomen's team hosting Northeastern at 5:00 pm.
