PHILADELPHIA - Former La Salle men's basketball standout Tyrone Garland is making quite a splash overseas for his new professional team. Garland, who helped lead the Explorers on a magical run to the Sweet 16 in 2013, joined Iceland Division I squad Breidablik Kopavogur for the 2016-17 season and is off to a stunning start.
Through the team's first nine games, Garland is averaging an eye-popping 31.1 points, 6.7 assists and a league-leading 5.3 steals per contest while shooting 56.9 percent from the floor. The scoring average ranks second in the league behind Terrance Motley's 38.2 points per outing, and his assist per game output of 6.7 is third.
Against Valur on Oct. 14, the Philadelphia native put up 43 points and recorded nine steals in a narrow loss. Facing off against the league's leading scorer Motley and his FSU team on Oct. 27, Garland recorded a triple-double and nearly had a rare quadruple-double with 37 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals in a 100-90 win. Breidablik is currently 6-3 on the year and stands in fourth place in the nine-team league.
Garland played for two seasons for the Explorers after transferring from Virginia Tech. He averaged 12.5 points per game as a senior and his famed "Southwest Philly Floater" with seconds remaining propelled La Salle into the 2013 Sweet Sixteen with a 76-74 win over Ole Miss. Last season, the 6-1 guard played professionally in Canada and averaged 12.9 points per contest for the Mississauga Power of the National Basketball League of Canada.
