Women’s Soccer Ties Seton Hall, 1-1

PHILADELPHIA –The La Salle women's soccer team battled through two overtime periods to earn a 1-1 draw with the Seton Hall Pirates on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.

Seton Hall's Delaney Suarez headed in a corner kick from Frankie Maier with 13 seconds remaining to tie the game after the Explorers had taken a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

Fia Jonsson got the Explorers out to a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, scoring off a free kick following a foul just outside the box. The senior deflected the kick off the wall and past SHU keeper Anna MacLean into the top left corner of the net.

"I think she's playing with a lot more confidence now," said head coach Paul Royal. "For her to step up in that moment and have the ability to put it away was great, it gave us a huge momentum boost."

The Explorers outshot SHU 24-7 in the game, including 12 shots on goal compared to only two for the Pirates. La Salle also had a goal wiped away for an offside penalty in the 12th minute.

Prior to Seton Hall's equalizer, the Explorers held the Pirates to just five shots (one on goal) and two corner kicks.

"The overall team defense is going to be our staple for the entire season," added Royal. "It's something we're going to rely on."

The Explorers hit the road for the first time this season on Sunday as they take on the Maryland Terrapins at Ludwig Field at 7 p.m.
