ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Former La Salle soccer standout
John McCarthy is taking his talents to Rochester, New York after signing a professional contract with the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer League earlier this week. The Rhinos compete in the USL Professional Division.
"It was always a dream of mine, ever since I was a little kid, to be a professional soccer player," McCarthy said. "To finally sign my name on a piece of paper knowing that I have a job as a professional soccer player is indescribable."
McCarthy's college career was indescribable at times, highlighted by a number of record-breaking performances. He retired as La Salle's all-time leader among goalkeepers in saves (468), shutouts (28), and games played (75). His save total ranks 18
th in NCAA Division I history while his shutout tally is tied for 20
th.
The Cinnaminson, N.J. native was ranked 63rd nationally by Top Drawer Soccer in its Postseason College Soccer Player Rankings. Recently, he spent several weeks in camp with the Seattle Sounders of the MLS and was released after suffering a hand injury.
The Northeast Catholic product was a four-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference choice, a three-time NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region selection, a three-time Soccer 6 All-Star, and a two-time NSCAA Scholar All-American. He graduated from La Salle in December with a degree in Integrated Science, Business & Technology.
