Experience, Depth Highlight Promising Men's Soccer Campaign

PHILADELPHIA – Coming off three consecutive Atlantic 10 tournament appearances, the La Salle men's soccer team will look to make it a four-peat with one of its most experienced and talented squads in recent memory. The Blue and Gold have churned out 26 wins over the past three seasons, the best three year stretch since Farrell guided his club to 32 combined victories from 1995-1997.

The Explorers boast a senior class of nine members, most of whom are expected to make substantial contributions. Six juniors, seven sophomores, and eight freshman make up the rest of the roster's constitution.

Senior John McCarthy was one of four goalkeepers to find his name on the MAC Hermann Award Preseason Watch List. Last season, McCarthy finished fourth nationally in saves (114), eighth in save percentage (.844), and 13th in saves/game (5.70). He is already La Salle's all-time leader in shutouts (23) and set a program record with nine shutouts a year ago.

Classmate Jason Plumhoff was an All-PDL selection over the summer and led the Explorers in points (18) last season. His 48 career points are good for a tie for tenth in program history. Plumhoff will be joined up front by sophomore Joe Farrell, an A-10 all-rookie choice a season ago, after tallying 14 points in his opening campaign. Junior Rob Friskey will offer the Explorers another viable scoring option, coming off an eight-point year which ranked third on the team.

The Explorer defense will be anchored by senior Mike Stanton, who has 53 career starts under his belt. The back line played a big role in La Salle's nine shutouts last season with McCarthy as the last line of defense.

Senior midfielder Kevin Pink has started 36 career games and facilitates much of the Explorer offense from his spot in the middle of the field. Junior Tom Baker started 13 games last season and finished fourth on the club with six points.

Coach Farrell expects several freshman to make an impact, despite the team's experience and depth.

The Blue and Gold kick-off their season on Friday at 7 PM at Lafayette.
