CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The La Salle golf team shot a school record team score of 285 and moved up four places in the standings to finish ninth at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday at Heron Bay Golf Club. The 285 was three under par and was also the third lowest score of the day.

The previous school record was a 289 set by last year's team in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The 54-hole total of 306-302-285=893 (+29) was by far the best three-round team total at A-10s by La Salle.

“It is such a great way to end the year for us,” first-year head coach Brad Kane said. “The goal today was to break 300 and get out of the basement and to blow by that and set a school record in the process is just awesome.

La Salle (893) bested Rhode Island (894), Butler (904), Fordham (906) and Saint Joseph's (906). The Explorers were three shots behind Dayton (890) for seventh and two behind St. Bonaventure (892) for eighth.

Freshman P.J. Acierno shot a collegiate low two-under 69, the lowest score by an Explorer at the Atlantic 10 Championship. He bettered junior Mike Johnson's score of 71 set at last year's A-10 Championship.
“PJ's round was great. He really put it together,” Kane said. “There's more of those in the future.”

Acierno, who had six birdies on Sunday, finished with a 76-73-69=218 (+2) to tie for 19th with Johnson (74-73-71=218).  The 54-hole total of 218 by both players is the lowest ever recorded by an Explorer at the A-10 Championship.

Johnson was steady with two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars for his 71 on Sunday.

“I played great tee to green but really struggled putting,” Johnson said. “We had a great day today with some guys stepping up big. PJ played great and finished strong.”

The performances of juniors Tyler Fewell and Tommy Horgan,, and sophomore Greg Goodreds, should not be overlooked.

Horgan shot a collegiate low score of 72 (E) on Sunday complete with five birdies. His 54-hole total of 80-81-72=233 (+17) was tied for 55th.

Fewell shot a 73 (+1) and his 80-79-73=232 (+16) tied for 53rd. Goodreds was consistent throughout the three-day event, 76-77-76=229 (+13), and finished 49th.

“Mike was a rock for us all week and Tommy stayed calm and in control all day,” Kane said. “I can't say enough about these guys. They stepped up today and got it done.”

Charlotte captured its Atlantic 10 record seventh golf championship and claim the Atlantic 10's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals.

Medalist Raoul Menard and his teammates combined to shoot 278-285-281-844 to defeat second-place VCU by eight strokes.   Temple finished third with a three day total of 861, while Xavier was fourth with a 291-287-285—863.

The 49ers were led by Menard who shot nine under par to win his second consecutive conference crown.   Just a sophomore, Menard shot a 67-71-69—207, while becoming the eighth player in A-10 history to win two career league championships.

Temple freshman Brandon Matthews finished second overall, two strokes behind Menard with a 71-68-70 – 209.  For his efforts, Matthews was named the 2013 Atlantic 10 Rookie Performer of the Year.

Charlotte's Ryan Cabbage was honored by his peers as the 2013 A-10 Coach of the Year.   Cabbage is in his second year at the helm of the Charlotte program.

Joining Menard and Matthews on the all-conference team was Braeden Cryderman  (Charlotte), Franco Castro ( Charlotte),  Branden Chicorka  (Rhode Island), Daniel Walker (Richmond), Rocky Khara  (VCU), Steffen Harm (VCU), Devin Bibeau (Temple),  Korey Ward (Xavier).
