PHILADELPHIA - John McCarthy has been named Philadelphia Soccer 6 Co-Defender of the Week, the organization announced today. McCarthy recorded two shutouts over the weekend as the Explorers defeated Fordham and GW to finish their conference season 5-2-1.
The Cinnaminson, N.J. native notched nine saves in the 2-0 win over the Rams on Friday afternoon. Two days later, he followed up with an eight save performance as La Salle took down GW, 1-0. McCarthy finished the regular season with an Atlantic 10-high 98 saves and 5.76 saves/game, good for ninth nationally.
The Northeast Catholic product has five shutouts on the season and 27 in his career - a program record.Â
His 451 career saves are six shy of tying Paul Centofanti (1986-89) for second in La Salle history.Â
The recognition marks the fourth time this season McCarthy has garnered the weekly nod. He shares the weekly honor with SJU's Andrew D'Ottavi.
