PHILADELPHIA—
Renee Washington netted the game-winning double overtime goal to give La Salle the 1-0 victory over Fordham to begin Atlantic 10 play. With the win, La Salle remains unbeaten in A-10 regular season competition for 19 consecutive games, a streak dating back to October 19, 2010 and spanning more than two seasons.
Washington's goal came in the 105
th minute after several near misses from the stellar senior. The Ewing, N.J. native recorded eight shots in the match, finding the back of the net with the one that mattered most.
"It was a tough game all around," Washington said. "I was hoping that if we kept the pressure on eventually something would fall our way. I'm glad I stayed composed to help us get our first conference win."
The goal was Washington's sixth of the season, increasing her career total to 37, just three shy of La Salle's all-time record set by Amy Schneider (1999-02).
"I thought we had quite a few chances that just weren't going in our favor," head coach
Paul Royal said. "We're really proud of the girls for fighting until the very end."
Junior
Maryam Huseini recorded the assist, increasing her season total to eight. With seven regular season games remaining, Huseini is just four assists shy of tying La Salle's all-time single season record in that category.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jessica Wiggins made three saves en route to earning the win, improving her season record to (4-1-1).
The Explorers will have a week's rest before hitting the road for A-10 contests at George Washington on Friday, at 3 p.m. and at VCU on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
"This group continues to amaze me with their perseverance, desire and will to win these tight A-10 games," Royal added. "We'll just need to clean a few things up in the final third and this group will be ready for a very tough weekend on the road."
