PHILADELPHIA - After winning three straight games to open the 2012 season, the La Salle men's soccer squad swept the first Philadelphia Soccer Six weekly awards of the season, announced by the city association on Tuesday.
Jason Plumhoff earned Player of the Week honors,
John McCarthy was named Defender of the Week and
Joe Farrell was tabbed Rookie of the Week.
Plumhoff netted two game-winning goals and assisted on the third. He converted a penalty kick in overtime as the Explorers battled to a 1-0 win at Loyola (Md.) on Friday before sinking the game winner in the 10th minute against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. Plumhoff also converted a penalty kick to open scoring in the Explorers' 3-2 Soccer Six victory over Drexel in the season opener, and assisted on Farrell's game winner just 45 seconds into the extra period.
McCarthy has recorded 16 saves in three games and recorded back-to-back shutouts this past weekend with a 1-0 overtime win at Loyola (Md.) and a 2-0 win over Mount St. Mary's. He sports a .889 save percentage and 0.65 goals against average in that span.
Farrell ranks second on the team with four points on one goal and team-leading two assists. He scored the game winner 45 seconds into overtime to help the Explorers come from behind to top Drexel 3-2 in his collegiate debut. He also assisted on the game-tying goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to send the contest into OT. Farrell also added another assist on the insurance goal in La Salle's 2-0 blanking of Mount St. Mary's.
The Explorers remain at home with a contest against Bucknell on Friday (9/7) at 7 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
