Jason Plumhoff netted his second penalty kick goal of the season as the La Salle men's soccer squad upended Loyola (Md.) 1-0 in the squad's second straight overtime win on Friday night.
"Loyola is a quality opponent and has a tremendous facility, so there was a great crowd and enthusiasm," Head Coach
Pat Farrell said. 'We stuck together and grinded it out in overtime."
Following an even 90 minutes of regulation, the Explorers (2-0) turned up the pressure in the overtime period, getting off four shots to Loyola's one. Larry Ndjock for the Greyhounds at the 97:06 mark, the Explorers took the ball quickly up the field and were fouled in the box to set up Plumhoff's penalty kick goal at 97:30.
Loyola (0-1-1) recorded seven shots to La Salle's four in the first half, but junior keeper
John McCarthy made two saves to keep the home squad off the board.
The two squads were evenly matched in the second half, each managing five shots and three shots on goal.
Plumhoff led the Explorers with five shots, three of which were on goal.
Joe Farrell added four shots and
Tom Baker recorded three. Ndjock recorded a game-best seven shots, three on goal.
McCarthy picked up the win in net with five saves. Loyola's Thurman Van Riper stopped three shots.
The Explorers return home on Sunday when they host Mount St. Mary's at 1 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
