Three Explorers Earn NSCAA All-Region Honors

PHILADELPHIA - Men's soccer juniors John McCarthy and Jason Plumhoff, along with rookie Joe Farrell, have been named to the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region team.

McCarthy earned First Team honors, and Plumhoff and Farrell were both named to the Third Team.

The trio staked La Salle to its third straight Atlantic 10 Tournament berth and the best nonconference record in decades. The Explorers went 10-7-3 overall and 6-3-2 in non-league action.

McCarthy solidified himself as one of the Atlantic 10's top goalkeepers this season, ranking first in four different categories including shutouts, save percentage, saves per game and total saves while being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team. His .844 save percentage ranked him eighth nationally and he finished the season ranked fourth nationally in total saves with 114. He recorded nine shutouts, the most of any A-10 goalkeeper this season, including the final two of the season that clinched the playoff spot. He broke the all-time school career shutout record of 21 (Stash Graham, 2001-04) and now has 23, with the ability to add on to that record next season. His nine shutouts on the season is also a school single-season record, bettering the old record of eight set by Mike Kogut in both 1982 and 1983.

Plumhoff led the Explorers offensively this season, recording 18 points on a team-best seven goals and team-high-tying four assists. He hit for three game-winning goals, including the game winner in a 3-0 blanking of Duquesne which clinched the tournament spot. He also hit the game-winning penalty kick in overtime at Loyola (Md.) and the game winner at Mount St. Mary's. All four of his assists were on game-winning goals as well, including the helper on the deciding goal at St. Bonaventure to keep the squad's playoff hopes alive. Also notable was the helper in overtime as the Explorers came from behind to defeat Drexel 3-2 in the season opener.

Farrell had a terrific rookie campaign, finishing second on the team in points with 14 on five goals and team-high-tying four assists and earning a nod on the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. He also recorded three game-winning goals and also a game-tying goal in a draw. He made a splash in his collegiate debut, netting the winner in overtime in the 3-2 come-from-behind win over Drexel in the season opener. Farrell also scored the winners at Lehigh and, fittingly, in his father Head Coach Pat Farrell's 200th career win at George Washington. He netted the equalizer in the 1-1 tie against Lafayette, and also assisted on the game winner in a 1-0 overtime win at Fordham.
