Women's Soccer Advances to A-10 Semifinals With 2-0 Win Over Charlotte

Box Score

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – La Salle Women's Soccer advances to the semifinal round of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship with a 2-0 victory over eighth-seeded Charlotte on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Maryam Huseini netted a beautiful goal in the 33rd minute off a restart from  25 yards out.  Huseini placed the ball just below the cross bar and out of the reach of Charlotte keeper Alex Kubrick for her third goal of the season.

"I thought our first half was a bit of a battle in trying to find space on in and along Charlotte's back line," said head coach Paul Royal, "but as the game wore on, I was very impressed with the chances we created."

The Explorers continued to pressure the 49ers in the second half, recording 18 shots to Charlotte's four.  La Salle persistence paid off when redshirt-senior Amanda Komarnicki chipped a shot over Kubrick from the end line off a pass from sophomore Gabriella Carbone to take the definitive 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

“It was great seeing Maryam's phenomenal restart goal as well as seeing Amanda score her first goal of the season," said Royal.  "Our backline and midfield managed the game very well too, especially the outstanding performance from Ashley Chilcoat. That's what so amazing with this team—you never know who will step up and become today's hero”

With the win, the Explorers advance to the semifinal round of the tournament and will face the winner of #4 Butler vs. #5 St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. Friday, November 2.
