La Salle Earns Second Straight A-10 Berth With 4-0 Win Over St. Joe's; Becomes Only A-10 School With Three Postseason Teams

Box Score PHILADELPHIA  - The La Salle men's soccer team wrapped up an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth for the second straight year with a commanding 4-0 win over rival Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Finnessey Field. The Explorers improve to 6-8-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the Atlantic 10, while the Hawks finish their season at 2-15 (1-8 A-10). The Explorers captured a No. 5 seed and will play in a rematch game with fourth-seeded Temple on Thursday at 8:30 PM Eastern (7:30 PM Central) at Saint Louis University.

With the clinching of the tournament berth, the squad became the third La Salle team to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament this season, joining women's soccer and field hockey as tournament participants as well as both cross country squads which won their respective championship.. La Salle is the only Atlantic 10 school to put three teams in the postseason tournament this season.

The Explorers and Hawks were scoreless at the half before the Blue and Gold exploded for four second half goals, two of which were set up by sophomore Jason Plumhoff who finished the regular season with 18 points. Plumhoff set Jeff Pio up for the first score in the 47th minute, passing the ball to Pio at the 15 yard mark who then blasted it into the upper right 90.

Jidell Roach scored less than five minutes later to give the squad some insurance. Pio found Roach on the left side, and Roach finished with a ball into the left side of the net past Hawk keeper Andrew D'Ottavi.

Rookie Tom Baker netted his first career goal in the 63rd minute on yet another Plumhoff assist. Plumhoff found Baker on the right side, who then blasted the ball across into the left side of the net.

Rob McIntyre rounded out the scoring in the 83rd minute when he gained control of the ball off of a corner and found the back of the net.

The Explorers outshot the Hawks 24-7. Keeper John McCarthy made four saves in his fifth shutout of the season, 13th of his career. D'Ottavi stopped seven shots while suffering the loss for the Hawks.

The win marks the fourth time the Explorers have downed the Hawks in their last five meetings. The Explorers have also wrapped up another terrific Atlantic 10 season and are 10-4-4 in the past two seasons combined in league play.

"It's a real special time around here right now," Head Coach Pat Farrell said. "We're playing at a whole new level. When you make the tournament the first time, people say you're lucky. When you make it the second time around, they know you're good."

The Explorers head to St. Louis this week as first round play opens on Thursday at Saint Louis University's Robert R. Hermann Stadium. They play in the second of two games on Thursday, taking on fourth-seeded Temple at 8:30 PM Eastern (7:30 PM Central), following the earlier game of #3 Charlotte vs. #6 Xavier. A win advances them to the semifinal on Friday against either #1 Fordham or #2 George Washington. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 2:00 PM Eastern (1:00 PM Central).
