McCarthy Named Soccer Six Player of the Week

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore goalkeeper John McCarthy (Cinnaminson, N.J./Northeast Catholic) was named the Soccer Six Player of the Week for the week ending October 7, announced by the Soccer Six on Tuesday. McCarthy shares the honor with Drexel keeper Pentti Pussinen.

McCarthy was pivotal in the first weekend of Atlantic 10 play, helping the Explorers to a 1-0-1 record to start the conference season. He stopped six shots in a 2-0 shutout of Dayton on Friday before facing 30 shots and coming up with 13 huge saves in a 2-2 tie with No. 23 Xavier. His shutout at Dayton was his third of the season and 11th of his career.

McCarthy recorded a 0.90 goals against average and .905 save percentage on the weekend. The NCAA also reported that he ranks sixth in the nation in saves per game (6.67) and 13th in total saves (60), while ranking in the top 40 nationally in save percentage (.811). Those numbers rank him second, third and third, respectively, in the Atlantic 10.

McCarthy has led the Explorers to a 3-1-2 record in their last six outings, which included a huge 2-1 win over regionally 10th-ranked UMBC to close out the nonconference season. Four of those contests were played on the road.

The squad returns to action on Friday (10/14) for the first of four straight home games. The Explorers host Rhode Island on Friday at 7:00 PM and follow up with Massachusetts on Sunday (10/16) at 1:00 PM.
