A few things you should know about Explorers Athletics....

La Salle student-athletes boast a 93% graduation rate for students who have exhausted their eligibility, which is among the nation's leaders. 


Since 1996, 37 student-athletes have been recognized as Academic All-Americans.

 

La Salle was identified as the 53rd best program of all-time by Street and Smith's college basketball publication.

 

La Salle is one of 17 schools to win both the post-season NIT (1952) and NCAA (1954) Tournaments.

 

La Salle has had three NCAA National Basketball Players of the Year (Tom Gola, Michael Brooks, and Lionel Simmons).

 

La Salle has three of the top five point scorers in Big Five history (Simmons, Brooks and Gola).

 

The 1980 Women's Field Hockey team won the National Championship.

 

La Salle has had 17 Olympians, including four gold medalists.

 

Track and Cross-Country Coach Charles Torpey has received 16 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Honors.

 

The Men's and Women's Cross Country teams have won a combined 13 Atlantic 10 Championships during the past nine years.

 

The Athletic Department's Project Teamwork was honored for the seventh consecutive year by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports for its community service and youth outreach program.

 

 

2007-2008 Highlights

 

Men's and women's Cross Country won the Atlantic 10 Championship, and Coach Charles Torpey was named A10 Coach of the Year for both the men and women.

 

Darnell Harris won the NCAA Three-Point competition at the Final Four weekend in San Antonio.  The event was broadcast nationally on ESPN.

 

The Explorers Distance Medley Relay (DMR) finished 5th In the Championship Heat of the Penn Relays.

 

Senior Carlene Hightower became just the third Explorer to be named Big 5 Women's Basketball Player of the Year.  Hightower was also a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, given annually to the player who personifies qualities of a complete student-athlete.

 

Men's Soccer's wasJeremy Ortiz selected in the first round of the Major Indoor Soccer League Draft.

 

183 La Salle student-athletes were selected to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.

 

80 Student-athletes received All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors.

 

44 La Salle student-athletes qualified for NCAA regional and championship events.

 

36 Atlantic 10 Individual Champions.

 

36 Student-Athletes were named Academic All-Conference.

 

14 School Records Broken.

 

7 Teams recognized as All-Academic Teams by their respective coaches' associations: Field Hockey, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Women's Cross Country, Women's Outdoor Track & Field, Women's Swimming and Volleyball.

 

6 Academic All-American honors for La Salle student-athletes: Ed Baynes (Cross Country), Carolyn Lipovsky (Outdoor Track), Yves Mekongo Mbala (Men's Basketball), Rachel Papin (Cross Country), Rachel Papin (Outdoor Track), and Billy Rhea (Outdoor Track).

 

3 Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year Awards: Rachel Papin (Indoor Track & Field), Sean Quigley (Indoor Track & Field), and Steven Rendall (Outdoor Track & Field).

 

3 NCAA All-Americans - Sean Quigley earned All-American recognition in three times: Indoor Track & Field (3K & 5K) and Outdoor Track & Field (10K).  Quigley now has been recognized as an All-American seven times during his career.

 

2 Atlantic 10 Scholar Athletes of the Year: Rachel Papin (Indoor Track & Field) and Billy Rhea (Outdoor Track and Field).
