Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

La Salle Tops George Mason 76-68; Price Scores Game-High 24

PHILADELPHIA- Junior Jordan Price scored a game-high 24 points to lead the La Salle men's basketball team to a 76-68 win over George Mason on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.

La Salle took care of the ball, committing just four turnovers compared to 15 from Mason. The four turnovers were the least in a game for the Explorers since December 2013 when they turned the ball over only three times in an 80-54 win over Wagner.

"It's the whole game," added head coach Dr. John Giannini about the lack of turnovers. "John Chaney had a Hall of Fame career; he won about 80 percent of his games doing that. Basketball is a simple game. When you do that good of a job, you are going to win almost all the time."

Sophomore Amar Stukes filled the stat sheet as he went for 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. The three steals were part of eight on the day for the Explorers as they pressed the Patriots into making 15 total turnovers.

"I tried to make any play I could; rebound, steals, getting on the floor," added Stukes. "Whatever play my team needed I tried my best to do."

"College has been an adjustment for him," added Giannini. "Now you see that he has made those adjustments. He is being more aggressive. He is feeling better about his shooting. I have always thought he could be a really good player and at this point he is making his work worth it."

Junior Cleon Roberts scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half thanks in part to a pair of threes and going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Price's 24 points were the most he has scored in a game since he went for 25 points at Florida Gulf Coast. Price also went over 500 points on the season, as he needed 14 points entering the day to hit the mark. This is the 57th time an Explorer has scored 500 in a season and the 18th time a single player has done it multiple seasons after Price scored 568 last season.

Tony Washington finished with a team-high 11 rebounds, it was the sixth time he finished in double-figure rebounds during league play.

Sophomore Yevgen Sakhniuk hit a jump hook with 6:52 remaining in the first half to give La Salle (7-20, 3-13 A-10) a lead from which they wouldn't look back as the Explorers led for 32:10 of the contest including the final 26:52 of the game.

The Explorers went on a 25-10 run late in the first half to create some separation between the two teams building an 11 point lead at 37-26 with 2:01 remaining in the first half. Price scored nine points during the stretch and the Explorers forced seven George Mason (10-19, 4-12 A-10) turnovers during the 10:43 run. La Salle also shot 10-for-22 (.454) from the field during the stretch.

Mason trimmed the Explorers lead to just four at 57-53 with 6:40 left in the contest after a Shevon Thompson tip in, but La Salle answered back with a 9-2 run to reopen up the lead to 11 at 66-55 with 3:17 to play.

The Blue and Gold hit 15 second half free throws to ice the game down the stretch.

Otis Livingston led Mason with 18 points, while Shevon Thompson had 14 points and 15 rebounds.

La Salle closes out its home schedule when it welcomes Saint Louis to Tom Gola Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The game will serve as Senior Day and the program will honor its two seniors, O.J. Lewis and Rohan Brown, with a pregame ceremony.
