PHILADELPHIA, PA (October 31, 2003) - The La Salle University women's soccer team upset the first-place Richmond Spiders, 1-0, in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Senior Krista Lee scored her sixth goal of the season off a feed from Ashley Cassel. Lee took the pass from the right side of the goal and shot the ball to the far left post, under the diving arms of Richmond goalie Kelly Kolker. The goal, which she scored at the 31:28 mark of the first half, turned out to be the game winner. For Lee, it was her third of the season, which have all come in Atlantic 10 matchups. La Salle (3-12-1, 3-7 A-10) was winless in its first 10 games, and was held scoreless in its first three home games. That all changed October 12th, when they put four on the board against Temple. Starting with that victory, the Explorers are 3-1 at home, have outscored their opponents 8-2, and their only loss was to Rhode Island, 2-1, in double overtime. Richmond (9-7-2, 7-2-1) entered the game one point ahead of Dayton for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings, with just two games remaining. They started Kolker in the game - her first start of the season - despite having statistically the conference's best goalie in Megan Cox (0.35 GAA and six shutouts). Cox did enter the game in the 58th minute, however that was after Kolker suffered an injury. In conference games, the Spiders had allowed just three goals in their prior nine games. The Explorer's Marisa Suarez made five saves in the contest to record her third shutout of the season, which have all been at home during their run. La Salle will play its final match of the season against George Washington, Sunday, November 1 at 1 PM. They will honor their three senior players before the game.
