Posted by: Matthew Smith (215-951-1637)Philadelphia, PA – The La Salle University Women’s Soccer team was defeated in double overtime, 2-1, by St. Bonaventure this afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
St. Bonaventure forward Heather MacDougall capitalized on some confusion in front of the Explorer net, and buried a shot into the right corner at the 5:55 mark of the second overtime. It was her second goal of the game.
Just minutes earlier, the Explorers had mounted a furious comeback, capped by Alexis Petrucci's (Abington, PA/Bishop McDevitt) goal with only five minutes remaining. On the play, senior Rachel Tobin (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) sent the ball in front on a corner kick, and Heather Barclay (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph's by the Sea) tipped it to Petrucci, who buried it to tie the score at 1-1.
Once again, the Explorers played much of the game on the offensive, but were unable to convert in the offensive zone. They out-shot the Bonnies, 25-12, and led in corner kicks, 6-2.
Freshman Kristin Hextall (Voorhees, NJ/Bishop Eustace) led La Salle with seven shots. Petrucci followed with six, including her goal.
Kerry Schamberger (Levittown, NY/St. Anthony's) made seven saves for the Explorers.
The loss drops the Explorers to 5-6-2 overall, and 1-4 in the conference. Their next game is on Friday, October 15th when they play at Temple. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
