Christie Shaner will join the La Salle Women's Soccer staff for her first year as an assistant coach. The newest member of the staff brings a wealth of soccer experience with her, as she has been playing for the FC Indiana Women's Team - a semi-professional team in the W League - for the last five years, which has been ranked as high as third in the world. The team was the 2008 W-League's runner-up and the Women's Open Cup Champions, a title they also won in 2005. They also took the WPSL National Championship in both 2005 and 2007. Shaner was a four-year starter at Notre Dame, and in her time with the Fightin' Irish, helped the team to four straight BIG EAST Regular Season Championships (2003-06) and two BIG EAST Tournament Championships (2005-06). They also advanced to the NCAA Championship games in 2004 and 2006, and won the title in 2004. Individually, Shaner earned First Team Academic All-American status in 2006 and was a Preseason All BIG EAST First Teamer and the Preseason Conference Defender of the Year. The 2003 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, was also an academic All-Region player in both 2004 and 2005. Prior to playing at Notre Dame, Shaner was a member of the US National Team Program from 1998-2004, which included a spot in the U-21 pool. She was a member of the Region I ODP team (1997-2003), the EPYSA State Team (1993-2003), and played for current Explorer Volunteer Assistant Coach Ed Leigh on the FC Parkwood/FC Bucks Challenge (1996-2003). She was a two-time PARADE All-American (2002-03) and a three-time NSCAA All-American (2000-02), and was a five-year starter for Germantown Academy. Shaner is currently pursuing a Master's degree at La Salle in professional communication. |
