Field Hockey Bounces Back with Dramatic Double Stroke Period Win

Philadelphia, PA – La Salle ended the 2 hour and 35 minute field hockey marathon with a 2-1 penalty stroke win in the second round of penalty strokes. The score at the end of regulation and double overtime was tied 1-1 with the visitng Bucknell Bison.

After two action packed overtime periods which featured a slew of scoring chances for both teams, the Explorers and Bison tied 3-3 in the first round of penalty strokes. In the second round, it only took four Explorer strokes to clinch the victory as junior goalie Colleen Bolger (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) turned aside four penalty strokes to lead the Explorers to victory.

The Explorer's opened the scoring off a corner which saw Amanda Spalding collect the ball and pass it inot Sara Camilli (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) for the goal just 9:42 into the first half. The Bison evened the score in the second half with an unassisted goal by Kelly O'Brien. O'Brien also had the game-high in shots with 7.

Bucknell outshot the Explorers 18-8, but Bolger had the answer stopping 12 shots while her counterpart Liz Jordan for Bucknell had 4 saves.

The Explorers sent up five players in the two rounds of five penalty strokes. In the first round, Emilie Stewart (Hershey, PA/Hershey), Amanda Spalding (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), and Lindsey Tyler (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) scored a stroke for the Explorers. In the second round, to clinch the victory Allison Geiger(Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) and Katharine Prokop(Towaco, NJ/Montville Twp) scored the strokes for the Explorers.

The Explorers next game marks start of their Atlantic 10 schedule. The game is home on Sunday October 12th against Richmond at 12 p.m. at Hank De Vincent field.
