Explorers Lose to the Hawks on a Penalty Stroke

Philadelphia, PA - With both the La Salle Explorers and Saint Joseph's Hawks standing at 1-3 in the Atlantic 10, Sunday's contest at Hank DeVincent Filed was a must win for both teams to increase hopes of earning a spot at the Atlantic 10 Championships. It was Saint Joseph's who clinched a 1-0 victory and improved to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while the Explorers drop to 5-12 overall and 1-4.

The first 35 minutes of play seemed to be a warm up for both teams, as the teams combined for just one shot and five penalty corners in the first half.
La Salle senior Becky Garry (Glenside, PA/Abington) was charged with a green and yellow card in the first half and was sidelined the last 5:43 of the half. Even with the advantage, Saint Jospeh's could not get their offense going.

After the intermission, the teams got back to business again, and again neither team appeared to make an offensive attack. At the 48:33 mark of the game,
La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) was charged with a penalty stroke, which put Saint Joseph's junior Shelley Meier (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) on the line to take the shot. Meier slipped it past Bolger on the right side to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Bolger was again charged with a penalty after falling on the ball, and with 4:46 left to play, Meier again attempted the penalty stroke shot. This time Meier went to the left and Bolger stopped the ball in its tracks. Unfortunately for the Explorers, Meier's first shot was enough to give them the victory.

The Explorers will close out the 2004 regular season next Saturday, October 30th, when they host West Chester at 12:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the seven La Salle seniors will be honored.
