Explorers Post Shut Out Victory Over Saint Joseph's
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle Explorer field hockey handed the Saint Joseph's Hawks their first conference loss of the season on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The win came in the form of a 1-0 victory and improved the Explorers' overall record to 5-11 and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10. The loss drops the Hawks to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Just like so many times this season, both traveled up and down the field with few shots being taken. The Hawks drew five penalty corners in the first half but could not convert any of those opportunities. La Salle meanwhile drew four penalty corners and at the 24:20 mark of the first half, Amy Comstock passed the ball out to stopper Haley Froshour who set up Kelly Dougherty for a shot that was knocked into the cage. As the last ten minutes of the half played out, the Hawks tried desperately to tie the score before intermission, but to no avail. After the intermission, the teams returned to the field with La Salle controlling much of the half. As time was winding down, the Hawks moved to La Salle's end of the field and tried again to tie the game. In a dramatic finish, the Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke as time was running out, but goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen batted Anne Schreuders' shot away, hitting the top bar of the cage to record the save. The officials added 14 seconds back to the clock, but the Explorers held off the Hawks attempts to claim the 1-0 victory. The Explorers will return to action next Friday, October 20th when they host the Rhode Island Rams in an Atlantic 10 conference match-up at 3:30 p.m. |
