Capping off what turned out to be a stellar opening weekend for the La Salle field hockey team, the Atlantic 10 announced today that senior goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen and freshman midfielder Beth Carey have earned Co-Player and Co-Rookie of the Week honors.

Axelsen started the season with a bang, posting back-to-back shutouts as the Explorers earned victories over Monmouth and Ball State. A native of New Hyde Park, NY, Axelsen recorded 13 saves over the two games.

Carey, a highly touted freshman from Lebanon, PA, did not disappoint in her collegiate debut. She scored the Explorers' first goal of the season against Monmouth, pacing the team in a 2-0 victory.

Axelsen becomes the first Explorer to earn Player of the Week honors since Sara Camilli won the award for the week of October 27th, 2003. Carey is the first Rookie of the Week since October 11th, 2004, when current senior Colleen Nesbitt won the award.

This is the first time in program history that multiple Explorers have earned A-10 awards in the same week.

Axelsen, Carey and the rest of the La Salle players will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday when they host Drexel at DeVincent Field at 4:00 p.m.
