La Salle Explorers vs. Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

The La Salle Explorers will venture on one of its most challenging road trips of the season as they prepare for a Midwest trip that features three games in four days. After falling in the season opener to Loyola (MD), 69-55, the Explorers answered back with an overtime victory on the road last Sunday against Long Island, 77-73. Morgan Robertson led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting and pulled down a team-best eight boards. Ashley Gale went 8-for-12 from the field, for 19 points, and Jamie Walsh contributed 11 points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals in a game-high 42 minutes.

The Explorers trailed by 20 at halftime, but a 9-0 run followed by 10 unanswered points a few minutes later put La Salle right back into the action. Despite going 0-for-4 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Explorers connected on five three-pointers in the second half and overtime. They shot slightly under 50 percent for the game and dished out 21 assists as a team.

Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (1-1)

The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles are coming off a 106-80 road loss to the No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks last Sunday. Janae Voelker led all scorers with a career-high 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting and was one rebound shy of a double-double, ending with nine. Kevi Luper was the only other Golden Eagle to finish with a 20-point performance as she contributed 24 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Defensively, Oral Roberts did not have an answer for the nationally-ranked Jayhawks, allowing Kansas to shoot 55.7 percent from the floor including 61.9 percent in the first half. Kansas outrebounded Oral Roberts, 51-31, and had the advantage in assists, 24-14.


 

 

La Salle Explorers vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

The Golden Hurricane opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 1-0 record as they defeated UMKC, 62-57, in the season opener on Tuesday. Freshman Taleya Mayberry got her collegiate career off to a good start finishing with a team-high 17 points. Tiffani Couisnard followed up with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting and Jermaine Kermis rounded out all double figure scorers with 11. Chanice Scott pulled down a game-high 10 boards and chipped in seven points.

Even though Tulsa only managed to shoot 37.5 percent from the field, its defense picked up the slack, allowing UMKC to shoot slightly over 30 percent for the game. The Golden Hurricane only converted two three-point baskets but did outrebound the opposition by eight, 49-41.

Saturday’s action wraps up a two-game homestand for Tulsa. They will then embark on a five-game road trip which will extend into December.

The Wichita State Shockers will look to take advantage of its upcoming five-game homestand after falling to Colorado State, 85-60, in the season opener. The Shockers had the advantage over the Rams in points in the paint (28-26), second chance points (14-12), points off turnovers (15-12) and fast break points (6-4), but Colorado State’s 18-6 run, which spanned from the end of the first half into the second half, put the Rams in the driver’s seat.

Haleigh Lankster was one of three Shockers in double figures with a career-high 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting while Marisah Henderson and Jessica Diamond each followed up with 11 points. Sheena Johnson paced the team with seven boards and Michelle Price and Jazimen Gordon each had six apiece.

Prior to their matchup with the Explorers, the Shockers will host Western Illinois on Friday.
