Men's Tennis Opens Season With a Pair of Losses
Feb. 3, 2008
JERSEY CITY, NJ - The La Salle men's tennis team took to the courts for the first time in 2008 at St. Peter's College this past weekend. The Blue and Gold dropped matches to St. Peter's and Saint Joseph's to open the spring season. The Explorers first match against St. Peter's was closer than the score appeared. The doubles duo of Andy Petrusky and Ryan Knarr teamed up to score the lone win on the afternoon, a come from behind 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory at the number one doubles slot. The duo came from a set down and was able to claw their way back to force a third set tiebreaker and ultimately take the match. In singles, La Salle's George Gennaoui was downed in a fierce match with Serge Igel 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Matt Rivera played a close first set before fading with a foot injury in the second set losing 6-4 6-0. At No. 3, Eric Glick took St. Peter's Peter Czujka the distance in a long three setter before losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Jon Maula was downed in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. In the second match of the doubleheader, the Explorers took on the Saint Joseph's University. This match was all St. Joe's from start to finish, as the Hawks took a commanding victory over the Explorers, winning all five matches in straight sets. "Today was a good start to 2008," said head coach Ed Colfer. "I thought the first four singles played well against St. Peter's and fought from start to finish. Andy (Petrusky) and Ryan (Knarr) were able to give us a nice win at number one doubles; I thought they played well. All in all, I think our guys were able to play against two quality opponents today and it will benefit us in the long run being battle tested against opponents like we faced here today."
The La Salle Explorers return to the courts in three weeks when they travel to Orlando, Florida to take on three non-conference foes over spring break.
