PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle rowing team opened its 2009-10 season at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday. The women's novice 8 and men's novice 4 boats led the Explorers with fifth place finishes in their respective races.

The men's novice fours rowed a 14:59.35 for fifth out of 14 teams in the race, behind just two Navy crews and two Saint Joseph's crews. The Explorers topped local foes Villanova and Penn in the race.

The women's novice eights also finished fifth out of nine teams with a time of 17:15.89, more than a minute and a half faster than sixth-place Mary Washington.

The men's novice eight boat finished in the top half of its race as well, as the crew placed ninth out of 20 teams. The Explorers crossed the finish line in 14:00.05.

The Explorers also raced in the women's varsity four, women's varsity eight, men's novice eight, men's JV eight and women's novice four races, in addition to the men's varsity four and varsity eight.

Results are still pending for the men's varsity fours and eights.

The La Salle crew is back on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, Oct. 24, for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. An alumni boat is also racing tomorrow in the Row For The Cure event.
