La Salle Crew Starts Season a Bit Soggy

Posted by: Michelle DeLong

VENTNOR, NJ - The La Salle University Men’s and Women’s Crew teams began their fall rowing season on Saturday October 8th at the Shore Boys Regatta in Ventnor, New Jersey. The Shore Boys Regatta was named such because the coaches of the competing teams, which included the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Lehigh University, along with La Salle, are from the area.

The race course was set along the Ventnor Bay and ran 5000 meters from north to south. Steady rain and rough water made the bay feel like the ocean.

Both the La Salle Men’s Varsity and JV boats raced against the Varsity and JV boats from Penn, Drexel and Lehigh.  La Salle’s Varsity boat contained Zach Coons, James Keough, Adam Sutkus, Jeff Laird, Terrence McClain, Matt Loftus, Bill Lockard, Pete Berenotto and coxswain Sarah Jones. They finished in a time of 15:23:15, which placed them fifth out of eight boats.

La Salle’s JV boat contained Blaine Kneeshaw, Tim Brosious, Ryan Fair, Rob Quinn, Rob Thomas, Matt Bateman, Mike Rockwood, Matt Tiedeken and coxswain Francesca Cupo. They finished in a time of 15:55:23, which placed them seventh out of eight boats. The first place men’s boat was Penn’s Varsity crew which finished in a time of 13:46:61.

Both the La Salle Women’s Varsity and JV boats raced against Varsity and JV boats from Drexel and Lehigh. La Salle’s Varsity boat contained Lauren Corkery, Aimee Nichols, Shauna Goetz, Therese Pomeroy, Michelle Kukawski, Kristin Weimer, Liz McGrain, Jessie Lamont and coxswain Frankie Lamont. They finished in a time of 17:43:65, good for second out of six boats.

La Salle’s JV boat contained Lauren Hokrein, Kellie Nadeau, Michelle DeLong, Becky Mahney, Jenn Sammartino, Rita Brown, Sarah Brown, Delia Spellman and coxswain Colleen Green. They finished in a time of 18:25:60, which placed them fourth out of six boats. The first place women’s boat was Lehigh’s Varsity crew which finished in a time of 16:59:29.

The crew teams will next be in action this Saturday, October 15 at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
