La Salle Competes at A-10 Championships

PENNSAUKEN, NJ - The University of Massachusetts won its 12th Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championships title in as many years, Saturday, on the Cooper River. The 12-championship title streak is the longest in any sport in the A-10 history.

 

La Salle, who finished with six points overall, good for ninth place in the championship, was entered in three races: the Varsity 8, the 2nd Varsity 8 and the Lightweight 4.

 

The Varsity 8 boat - consisting of Aimee Nichols, Michelle Kukawski, Becky Mahney, Shauna Goetz, Kristin Weimar, Dani Fralen, Michelle DeLong, Sadie Mazur and Nicole Caronia - raced first.

 

They finished their heat in a time of 7:42.26, which qualified them for the petite finals. Later in the day, they finished the petite final (a non-scoring event) with a time of 7:40.4 good for second place.

 

Registering points for the Explorers was the 2nd Varsity 8 (three points); a boat consisting of Rowing in the 2nd Varsity 8 was Sarah Brown, Molly Gatch, Jacquelyn Smolarek, Karen Mahoney, Meg Brown, Rita Brown, Desiree Cappuccio, Gillian Powell and Patrice Girard. They took sixth place in a time of 7:44.9.

 

The Lightweight 4 also registered three points for the Explorers, after taking fourth in a time of 8:21.6. In that boat was Mazur, Gatch, Powell, Girard and Caronia.
